A guide to your first Girls Can Ride weekend!

A guide to your first Girls Can Ride weekend!

Feeling a little nervous because you don’t know what to expect?

Firstly, that is completely normal. You don’t need to arrive fearless, know anyone or be the most experienced rider on the track. You just need to arrive willing to learn, give things a go and support the girls around you!

A GCR weekend is two days of dirt bikes, coaching, mindset, connection and a whole lot of fun. It’s a place where you can work on your riding without judgment or pressure, surrounded by women who genuinely want to see you win.

Here’s everything you need to know before your first Girls Can Ride weekend.

Who is the weekend for?

Any female, any age, any riding level, with any dirt bike!

If you know how to ride your bike in a straight line, we’ll help you with the rest. You don’t need to be confident on a motocross track, know how to jump or have years of experience behind you.

If you have never ridden before and don’t yet know how to use the controls, we recommend beginning with one of our 1:1 coaching sessions. This is purely so you can learn those first skills in a more chilled environment and have the best possible experience when you join all the other girls at GCR without feeling worried or overwhelmed.

Not sure whether your riding level is suitable? Contact us before booking. We’ll help you work out the best next step.

What happens across the weekend?

We'd LOVE you to arrive and set up camp on Friday, which will give you time to settle in before the riding begins.

Saturday

Throughout the day, you can expect body positioning coaching, basic skills, on track coaching sections, mindset coaching, a very special Ride with Tay, our themed YCF pit bike relay, and a campfire mindset talk under the stars!

Our YCF pit bike relay theme changes for each event, so check your ticket information and bring your outfit. You don’t need to own a pit bike to participate, but you are absolutely welcome to bring yours if you have one.

Saturday night is about slowing down, sitting around the campfire and connecting with the women you’ve spent the day riding beside.

Sunday

Sunday includes a group photo, goodie bags from our brand partners, bike maintenance seminar, more coaching sections, free time on the track, stark demo rides.

We finish at approximately 3 pm on Sunday, giving everyone time to pack up and begin the drive home!

We also have our own photographer capturing the weekend, so you can stay present and enjoy the experience while those memories are documented for you.

How do the coaching and riding groups work?

For most of the weekend we learn and progress together. This helps create the supportive group environment that GCR is known for - you get to learn from the coaching, watch other girls work through the same skills and celebrate each other’s wins.

For jumping, we separate riders into suitable groups. Girls who are completely new to jumping can focus on safe foundations and smaller progressions, while riders who already have jumping experience can work towards bigger jumps and more advanced goals.

You are never expected to attempt something simply because another rider is doing it. Our coaching is about finding the next appropriate step for you, focusing on correct technique and building confidence through repetition.

Mindset is integrated throughout our coaching. We help you recognise what may be holding you back, shift your focus and turn a big, overwhelming goal into smaller actions you can control. If we notice a barrier, we'll stop at nothing to help you overcome it!

What should you bring?

Riding gear

Please bring all the necessary protective gear for riding. If you’re unsure about what you need, watch this video before the event.

Fuel

Bring enough fuel for your entire weekend of riding. If you ride an electric bike, make sure you bring the charging equipment you require. If you need assistance, contact us and we can see if we can source a generator for you!

A flat bike stand

We use bike stands for our body positioning session before heading out to ride on Saturday morning. A pop up stand is fine, but make sure your bike sits securely on it without feeling too wobbly underneath you. We recommend the Polisport foldable bike stand, and we can help teach you how to lift your bike onto it if needed. If you’re stuck without a stand close to the event, let us know in the group chat.

Camping equipment

You can bring a tent, swag or caravan, or sleep in your vehicle... whatever works best for you. Remember to pack plenty of blankets because it can be cold at night.

A camp chair

You’ll need this for our campfire chats and bike maintenance seminar.

Food and water

Please bring enough meals, snacks, fruit and water for the entire weekend. Pack some extra nutrient dense food and even pack your happy way protein [discount code if you want to grab some - "HAPPYTAYLOR"] for your drive home too to look after your body properly. It will be a big weekend, and some of you girls will have several hours of driving ahead of them.

Towel and toiletries

We have a toilet and shower available on site. As everyone shares the facilities, please keep your showers as quick as possible.

Your YCF pit bike relay outfit

The dress up theme changes for every event and will be included in your ticket description. Get creative, the relay is one of the most fun parts of the weekend!

A few other things

Mosquito spray and anything else you use for insect protection, a head torch if you have one, bin bags, a pit bike if you own one and would like to bring it, and the best vibes of course!!!!

Our rubbish collection is limited, so we ask everyone to please bag their rubbish and take it home at the end of the weekend. It helps us alot being in the middle of nowhere!

What facilities are at GCR?

Our private property includes: a motocross track designed for us girls, a safe pit bike track, a designated area for basics coaching, a campground and toilet and shower

Camping is available on Friday and Saturday night, so you can settle in before the event and enjoy the full weekend experience.

We do not provide meals, so please bring all the food and water you’ll need.

Throttle Girls merchandise will also be available during the weekend.

What if you feel nervous?

We always say that nerves can be a good thing, they often mean you’re stepping outside your comfort zone.

Before the event, you’ll be invited into our Instagram group chat. It gives everyone a chance to introduce themselves, ask questions, start forming friendships and ease some of those nerves before arriving.

One of our favourite mindset tools comes from our good friend Caroline Buchanan, who asked us:

“How do you eat an elephant?”

The answer is: one bite at a time.

When a track, skill or goal feels overwhelming, the best thing you can do is stop focusing on the entire challenge and bring your attention back to one small thing you can control.

Sometimes the goal shouldn’t be “I have to clear this jump.” Instead, shift our focus on the smaller things to build that habit first! Usually it's ALL to do with technique, so do not worry if you are coming to the event not feeling confident. This event is DESIGNED for you! Sometimes the biggest thing that's holding us back is what’s happening inside our own minds. We help you break that down throughout the weekend.

What if you’re coming alone?

Coming alone can be one of the best things you do for yourself.

We often find that girls get even more from GCR when they arrive without the influence or expectations of anyone they normally ride with. It gives them the opportunity to listen to themselves, decide what they want from the weekend and begin like a blank canvas.

You won’t be left to figure it out alone. Our group chat lets you begin meeting everyone before you arrive, and the GCR girls are incredibly welcoming. Some girls even organise to travel up together, following each other with their cars and bikes so they don't come "alone".

GCR attracts the most supportive, like minded community of women. You may arrive by yourself, but you won’t feel alone the minute you arrive.

How should you prepare your bike?

Please complete the general checks and maintenance on your bike before arriving.

This should include checking: Tyre condition and pressure, fuel levels or battery charge, brakes, chain tension and chain lube, throttle and clutch, any loose parts, leaks or visible damage, that your bike is set up comfortably for you.

Your bike should arrive safe and ready to ride. However if you’re a little unsure, let us know when you arrive and we can help check over it with you.

You’ll also learn more during our Sunday bike maintenance seminar, so you leave feeling more confident about caring for your bike yourself.

How will you receive the final instructions?

We’ll send your final instructions one week before the weekend. This will include the important information you need for arrival and the event.

We’ll also share updates in our Instagram group chat. Reply to your event email with your Instagram username and we’ll add you. If you don’t use Instagram, don’t worry, we’ll make sure you receive any important updates by email.

What will you leave with?

You’ll leave with new riding skills, more confidence, a stronger mindset, incredible memories and new friendships with women who understand and support your goals.

But the impact of GCR often continues long after everyone drives home.

We like to call it the GCR ripple effect.

It’s the confidence you take into your next ride. The voice in your head that reminds you to take things one step at a time. The friendships that continue beyond the weekend. The courage to attempt something you once believed you couldn’t do and the way that belief begins to flow into other parts of your life.

Girls Can Ride is about more than becoming a better rider. It’s about becoming a woman who believes in herself, and being surrounded by a community that believes in her too.

Get ready for the most incredible weekend with like minded girls, and to become part of a community that will support you so loudly it begins to drown out your doubts.

Further together, always!!!
